Category: Banking and Finance

Two Banks under formation in Ethiopia, Noah International Bank and Tsehay International Bank, submitted letters to the National Bank requesting the dissolution and release of equity raised by shareholders and placed in blocked accounts with the central bank.

Promoters of both banks cited the recent directive from the central bank that raised the required capital for banks from 75 million to 500 million as the reason behind the decision for dissolution.

Noah Bank had raised 80 million birr and Tsehay Bank 100 million, which was previously adequate but far from the current requirements of 500 million. Promoters of the two banks claimed that the banks did not have the ability to raise the required levels of capital.

7% Growth Estimated for Ethiopia Coffee Exports

Details
Published on 24 February 2012
Category: Latest Business Alerts

It is expected that coffee exports from Ethiopia will grow by at least 7% this year according to the Ethiopian Coffee ExportersAssociation.

Coffee exports from Ethiopia are expected to add up to 150,000 metric tons in the remaining two quarters of the Ethiopian financial year said Tesfaye Kenea, Acting General Manger of ECEA.

Coffee shipments in the last two quarters totaled 60,000 tons which is 35,000 tons less than what was shipped in the same period last fiscal year he said.

The decline in exports was primarily due to the two month delay in harvest because of the long rainy season and because the price of coffee in Ethiopia did not go down in proportion to the drops seen on the international market explained Tesfaye.
