TAF Oil, Acquires Ethiopian City Bus Supply Contract

TAF Oil outbid several established vendors in the sector to acquire a fuel supply contract for Anbessa City Bus Services Enterprise, Ethiopia estimated to be worth almost 500 million birr.

Anbessa announced the winner of the bid in a letter addressed to TAF on the 29th of March.

The company will supply more than 26 million liters of benzene, Nafta and 500 thousand liters of other lubricants and greases over two years from the signing of the contract according to sources. It is expected that TAF will earn an estimated 484 million birr over this time.

Ethiopian Water Project 90% Complete

The Tendaho Drinking Water Supply Project, Ethiopia is 90% complete according to Kumelachew Abebe, Communications and Public Relations Process Owner with the Ethiopian Water Works Construction Enterprise.

The project is expected to take 97 million birr and will be utilized by the nomadic Afar peoples and the employees of the Tendaho Sugar Development project, a total of almost 70,000 people in the area around the project.

The Tendaho Dam and Irrigation Project management buildings, also being constructed by the EWWCE, are also 90% complete at an estimated cost of 200 million birr said Kumelachew.

UNSC Resolution Delays Electric Export From Ethiopia

A resolution passed by the United Nations Security Council to enact further sanctions on Iranian assets is expected to delay Ethiopia’s bid to export electricity to Sudan as the construction of substations and the supply of equipment had been awarded to Iran Power & Water Export of Equipment & Services Company in an international bid.

The Ethiopian Electric Power Corporation and IPWEESC had subsequently reached an agreement fro the completion of the project in 18 months, with a 41 million US dollar loan from the World Bank providing the financing and an ultimate aim of exporting 100MW of electricity to Sudan commencing in May 2012.

Chamber to Construct HQ in Ethiopian Capital

The Board of Directors of the Addis Ababa Chamber of Commerce and Sectoral Association is to request land from the city administration of the Ethiopia's capital to construct its headquarters reported sources.

The board of the AACCSA reached the decision to build its own headquarters three months after the resolution between it and the national chamber over the ownership of the seven-storey building housing both chambers.

The leaders of both chambers decided that the building will be owned by the national chamber with the AACCSA making using of two floors free of charge.

Ethiopia & China to Produce Mining Maps

The Ministry of Mines, Ethiopia and the Mines Bureau of Chongqing State, China are to collaborate in the preparation of a range of maps for mining investment in Southern and Southwestern Ethiopia.

The partnership grew out of a memorandum of understanding signed between the Ethiopian Geological Survey and the Bureau of Mines & Minerals Exploration Development of China late last year.

Geological experts from the Chinese Mines Bureau conducted a preliminary study and presented a project proposal to the MoM led by Minister Sinkinesh Ejigu last week.

Commercial Bank of Ethiopia Bid Attracts Fierce Competition

The recent invitation put out by the Commercial Bank of Ethiopia for the supply of Automated Teller Machines and Point of Sales Machines has attracted fierce competition from international and local suppliers.

Three international technology suppliers, Moroccan M2M, Indian Copy Cat and CBM, are competing for the contract to supply 420 ATM machines to the Ethiopian Bank estimated to be worth millions of US dollars.

Two companies, M2M and SSC, have reached the last stages of the competition to supply 4000 units of POS machines according to sources.

Fiber Optics Failure Lost Ethiopian Customs Millions

The Bole International airport, Ethiopia Revenue and Customs Authority lost an estimated 30 million birr in revenue to fiber optics network failure that lasted for two days last week.

The optical fiber network failed for the second time in 50 days due to alleged damages to the lines around the Bole Michael area according to sources.

A similar problem that occurred at the beginning of the month of February had shut down the Customs office for three days resulting in an estimated loss of 40-50 million birr in revenue.

Ethiopian Airlines to Acquire 15 new Aircraft this Year

Ethiopian Airlines, Ethiopia’s flag carrier, is to acquire four Boeing 787 Dreamliner Jetliners, two Boeing 777 freighters, four Boeing 737-800 and Five Bombardier Q400 aircraft by the end of this year according to Tewolde Gebremariam, Chief Executive Officer of the airline.

Ethiopian had put in an order for ten Dreamliner aircraft at a total cost of 1.5 billion US dollars in 2005 with delivery expected in 200-2010. After several delays Boeing has now confirmed that the first two Dreamliner aircraft will be delivered in July or August of this year although the exact date has not been decided said Tewolde.

Petro Trans to Conduct Survey on Ethiopian Gas Fields

Petro Trans has contracted BGP and Sunrise, Chinese companies, to undertake seismic survey and exploration well drilling of the Calub and Hilala gas fields in Ethiopia according to Richard Spooner, Country Manager for the company.

BGP was hired last month to collect seismic data from the Hilala, calub, Genale and Warder blocks explained Spooner. Experts from the company have already begun analyzing the petroleum data collected from the Ogaden he said.
