Ethiopia to Launch Radar System for Meteorological Study

Ethiopia’s National Meteorological Agency is to launch a radar system in Bahir dar to increase the agencies data collection. The system is expected to cost 4 million US dollars and is being funded by the World Bank.

The project, which will be a part of the Tana Beles Hydro Power plant, will help to monitor climate changes for the dam according to Hailu Wudineh, Director of Public Relations with the agency.

The radar system will employ state of the art technology to monitor national atmosphere and read weather patterns explained Hailu.

TAF Oil, Acquires Ethiopian City Bus Supply Contract

TAF Oil outbid several established vendors in the sector to acquire a fuel supply contract for Anbessa City Bus Services Enterprise, Ethiopia estimated to be worth almost 500 million birr.

Anbessa announced the winner of the bid in a letter addressed to TAF on the 29th of March.

The company will supply more than 26 million liters of benzene, Nafta and 500 thousand liters of other lubricants and greases over two years from the signing of the contract according to sources. It is expected that TAF will earn an estimated 484 million birr over this time.

Ethiopia Increasing Warehouses for Multi-Modal Transport

The Ministry of Transport, Ethiopia is increasing the number of custom warehouses for use in multi-modal transport across the country.

The National Bank of Ethiopia authorized banks to open letters of credit for their clients to ship to the new warehouses operated by the Ethiopian Revenue and Customs Authority, according to a letter circulated by the bank.

The letter sent out from the central bank indicated that 10 new warehouses in various parts of the country have set up to facilitate the multi-modal transport system.

Con.Com (Construction Communication), a new reference catalog detailing product and service providers in the construction sector in Ethiopia was launched last week. Con. Com is published by MCS General Trading.

The catalog listed the details of 255 companies engaged in the construction sector as service and material providers. It is expected that the publication will enhance the marketing and strategy system of the sector.

Ethiopian Airlines to Acquire 15 new Aircraft this Year

Ethiopian Airlines, Ethiopia’s flag carrier, is to acquire four Boeing 787 Dreamliner Jetliners, two Boeing 777 freighters, four Boeing 737-800 and Five Bombardier Q400 aircraft by the end of this year according to Tewolde Gebremariam, Chief Executive Officer of the airline.

Ethiopian had put in an order for ten Dreamliner aircraft at a total cost of 1.5 billion US dollars in 2005 with delivery expected in 200-2010. After several delays Boeing has now confirmed that the first two Dreamliner aircraft will be delivered in July or August of this year although the exact date has not been decided said Tewolde.
