Marathon Motors Sets Up First Electric Vehicle Charging Station in Ethiopia

electriv-vehicle-charging-station-inaugurationMarathon Motors, the Hyundai importer and assembler in Ethiopia, inaugurated an electric vehicle charging station in Addis Ababa. The charging station is the first of its kind in Ethiopia.

During the inaugural ceremony, Marathon Motors has also unveiled its new modles of electric vehicles, named "Hyundai Koyna" and "Hyundai Ayonk". The cars cost 3.5 million birr each.

The electrical vehicle charging station can charge vehicles fully within 15 minutes, enough for a 300-km drive.

Marathon showcased its first locally assembled electric vehicles in July 2020. The cars are said to be instrumental in saving Ethiopia hard currency, in addition to the other economic benefits the local assembly has.

Dagmawit Moges, Ethiopia's Minister of Transport and Logistics, said her Ministry is "working to establish a system which will enable the adoption of electrical vehicles including local manufacturing and assembly. We are working on incentive packages for electrical vehicles and associated infrastructure."

"Our vision of decarbonization of the transport and logistics sector is within reach," Ms. Dagmawit remarked.

Marathon Motors plans to make fifty percent of the vehicles it sells to be electric cars by the year 2023, and all the vehicles it sells in Ethiopia to be electric by 2025.

Various high ranking government officials have attended the inaugration of the electric vehicle charing station.
