Ethio Telecom has announced a 5 percent bonus when users in Ethiopia receive remittance money from abroad via its mobile money service telebirr. The bonus is to be used to buy Ethio Telecom's air time and mobile packages.

Ethio Telecom said the offer stays until 16 January 2022.

While the amount received can be cashed at any telebirr agent or be transferred to a bank account, the 5 percent bonus can only be used to buy air time or mobile packages, the terms and conditions read. Recipients have also the option to transfer the bonus to another user.

The maximum daily cash-out limit for customers who receive remittance via telebirr is set at 5,000 birr for level 1, and 50,000 birr for levels 2 and 3, depending on the customer's "trust level". The trust level is determined according to the completeness of information the customer provides upon registering for telebirr services.

Customers can also transfer the received remittance to their bank account without limit, and free of charge, Ethio Telecom pointed out.

While users can receive money via their mobile numbers without having the need to have telebirr account prior to that, they will however be required to receive the remittance, or the transfer will be reversed within 30 days.

Ethiopia launched telebirr, a mobile money service that allows customers of Ethio Telecom, the country's telecom services provider, to send, store and receive money using only their phone number, in May this year.
