Ethiopia has launched ‘Telebirr’ - a mobile money service that allows customers of Ethio Telecom, the country's telecom services provider, to send, store and receive money using only their phone number. ‘Telebirr’ aims to extend mobile services to our financially excluded sections of society.
Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy, present during the launching of the service, commended Ethio Telecom and stakeholders for enabling the realization of the project "within a very short time period." Mentioning that Ethio Telecom launched the service a week after obtaining the operational license for the service, PM Abiy said they demonstrated "early preparedness."
