Ethiopia: Codeshare Agreement Concluded between Ethiopian and Austrian Airlines

A new international initiative aimed at addressing coffee related deforestation has been launched with an East Africa pilot that includes Ethiopia, Tanzania, Kenya, Uganda, Burundi and Rwanda. The Coffee Canopy Partnership, initiated by JDE Peet’s and developed with a group of major coffee companies, seeks to create what is described as the world’s first comprehensive and openly accessible map of global coffee production. The project is intended to improve the identification of deforestation risks, support landscape restoration and protect the livelihoods of smallholder farmers across coffee growing regions.
Ethiopian Coffee and Tea Authority announced that Ethiopia was able to collect USD 526 million from coffee export during the first four months of the 2022/2023 fiscal year. The revenue surpasses last year’s gain from coffee during the same period by USD 126 million. According to the Authority, Germany is the largest importer of Ethiopian coffee followed by the United States and Saudi Arabia.

Ethiopian Coffee and Tea Authority announced that Ethiopia earned USD 787 million from coffee export during the past 8 months. According to the Authority, Ethiopia achieved a better performance in coffee export when compared to the same period in the last fiscal year even though the Ukraine-Russia war affected the European coffee market which was the top destination for Ethiopian coffee.

In August 2023, Ethiopia's coffee industry achieved a significant milestone as it garnered USD 140 million in revenue from exporting 27,000 tons of coffee. This marks an impressive 18% increase in coffee volume compared to the same period last year.
