In August 2023, Ethiopia's coffee industry achieved a significant milestone as it garnered USD 140 million in revenue from exporting 27,000 tons of coffee. This marks an impressive 18% increase in coffee volume compared to the same period last year.

Despite a significant decline in global coffee prices recently, Ethiopia's coffee exports have continued to flourish. This resilience can be attributed to the nation's ability to provide coffee products that remain resilient to shifting market conditions.

Adugna Debela, the Director-General of the Ethiopian Coffee and Tea Authority (ECTA), attributed this surge in coffee exports to the comprehensive reforms implemented within the sector over the past couple of years. These reforms have been dedicated to enhancing both the quality and quantity of coffee production while streamlining export procedures, making it more convenient for exporters.

The ECTA is actively collaborating with stakeholders, including farmers, in pursuit of its ambitious goal of earning USD 1.75 billion through the export of 350,000 tons of coffee in the 2023/24 fiscal year. Additionally, the authority aims to surpass the USD 2 billion mark in coffee income within the next two years.

Ethiopian coffee finds its way to various global destinations such as Saudi Arabia, Germany, South Korea, Belgium, Japan, the United States, and the United Arab Emirates.
