Ethiopian Shipping Lines Opening Multi Modal Transport to the Private Sector

The Ethiopian Shipping Lines Share Company announced plans to open Multi Modal Transport service to the private sector.

Multi Modal transport offers the transportation of goods through different means of shipping (eg rail and road) under a single contract. The carrier is held liable for the whole trip across the various means under this system.

The Multi Modal system will be in effect for goods passing through Port Djibouti which accounts for 98% of Ethiopia’s imports and exports.

Ethiopian Shipping and Logistics Services Enterprise’s (ESLSE) two oil tankers named Bahr Dar and Hawassa, which were bought 11 years ago to carry the country's oil, have been replaced by Abay 2, a huge ship with a loading capacity of 63,500 tons.

Ethiopian Ships to Be Deployed on New Routes

The Ethiopian Shipping and Logistics Service Enterprise is undertaking a study on potential new routes to deploy its new ships.

The enterprise decided to service more destinations after taking charge of nine new vessels it had on order in China, said Alemu Ambaye, Chief Engineer, Deputy Chief Executive of the ELSE. The nine ships are one multipurpose cargo and oil tanker vessel from the total of its nine vessels, two tankers and seven multipurpose cargo vessels he said.

The carrier is currently focusing on routes to Asia using arrangements with other shipping lines to serve import and export business in other parts of the world.

Ethiopian Signs Code Share Agreement with Asiana Airlines

Ethiopian Airlines entered into a code share agreement last week with Asiana Airlines, the award winning South Korean airline, to enhance the growing cooperation with Star Alliance member carriers.

The Ethiopian Airlines said that the partnership between Ethiopian and Asiana would provide passengers of both airlines with greater flight options and better connections between Africa and Asia.

Ethiopian SMEs Participate in SMEX Algeria

SMEX AlgeriaEthiopian small and medium enterprises engaged in coffee, leather products, and handicraft export participated in the Arab International SMEs Conference and Expo (SMEX Algeria) which took place in Algiers between November 12 and 14. Fairs and Exports, an Algerian company, and the Arab Union for Industrial Exports Development organized the event which was themed “The Fourth Industrial Revolution: Challenges and Opportunities for SMEs”.

Aster Coffee Processing, Enabe Buna, Fentaye, Bekelech & Friends, Abrish & Families Leather, and Dingoza Handicrafts represented Ethiopia at the event where 400 exhibitors from several African countries including Algeria and the Middle East participated.
