MTN Ethiopia, African mobile operator announced the launch of prize award programs to promote young Ethiopian women's innovation and business ideas in cooperation with Addis Ababa University.

Asseco, a Polish software company is to partner with Ethiopian information technology companies to establish a software developing company in Ethiopia. Asseco is  Europe's seventh largest software developing company.

“Our focus is it to expand in Africa, particularly Ethiopia,” Dariusz Brzeski, member of the company's supervisory board, said.

Aksher Ethiopia Establishing Animal By-product Processing Plant

Aksher Ethiopia, a Turkish investors owned company is establishing an animal by-product processing plant and abattoir at a cost of 196 million Birr in Ethiopia.

The animal by-product processing plant will be erected on a 2,300sqm plot of land located in Lome Wereda, near Modjo town, while additional 2000 sqm of land will be used to construct abattoir.

The company acquired the land from the government on a 40 year lease agreement. The processing plant will collect animal by products from abattoirs throughout Ethiopia, including, Hawassa, Jimma, Dire Dawa, Harar, Mekelle, Bahir Dar, Gonder, Dessie and other towns.

Ethiopian Shipping and Logistics Enterprise is finalizing preparations to award design and construction contract for additional warehouse at Modjo Dry Port.

The latest stuffing and stripping warehouse will be built on 5,400 square meter plot. The project will also include construction of a container freight station.

National Bank of Ethiopia to Allow Banks to Engage in Non-Banking Business

National Bank of Ethiopia has drafted a new directive which will allow banks to engage in non-banking business activities. now allows banks to directly engage in businesses not related to banking, provided that  they do so in a joint venture or partnership agreement with their customers,  through an interest free banking service.

The draft bill is designed to repeal the 1996 Limitation on Investment of Banks, National Bank of Ethiopia directive. Banks who will engage in non banking activites are required to do so in a joint venture or partnership agreement with their customers,  through an interest free banking service.

Ethiopian Airlines Announces New Destinations to East Asia

Ethiopian Airlines announced expansion of its Asian network with the addition of three new destinations,Ho Chi Minh City, Manila and Seoul, as of June 18.

Ethiopian flights from Addis Ababa to Hong Kong will no longer need to stop in Bangkok; Hong Kong will now be served with a daily non-stop service from Addis Ababa instead of the current four-times-a-week flights routed through Bangkok, the airlines said.

IATA Delegation to Celebrate World Aviation Day in Ethiopia

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) delegation led by its director general and CEO, Tony Tyler, is set to visit Ethiopia this coming month.

The delegation will arrive in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia on April 16 to celebrate World Aviation Day with executives of Ethiopian Airlines and officials of the Ministry of Transport and the Civil Aviation Authority of Ethiopia. This would be for the first time for IATA to marks World Aviation Day in Ethiopia.

The U.A.E based Falcon Petroleum Ltd is conducting a seismic survey of its Blue Nile Concession in Wereilu South Wollo Zone, Amhara National Regional State of Ethiopia.

Falcon Petroleum has contracted the Italian company,GeoDynamics Research to carry out the seismic survey. GeoDynamics is carrying out a passive seismic survey for the third time in Ethiopia. Previously the GeoDynamics had conducted two passive seismic surveys named Wereilu I and II.

Ethiopia Secured USD 17.7 Million from Valentine’s Day Flower Export

Ethiopia has secured more than USD 17.7 million from Valentine’s Day celebration flower export.The country earned the revenue from the export of 210.8 million stems flower to the international market in this Valentine’s Day celebration.

The flower export during this year’s Valentine’s Day exceeded in quantity as well as in terms of revenue as of the same period last year.

Last year’s Valentine’s Day celebration, the country earned 17.4 million USD from the sale of 195.6 million flower stems. The amount secured has been increased by 300,000 USD this year.
