Expansion of Finchaa Sugar, Ethiopia to be Completed this Year

The expansion work being done on Finchaa Sugar Factory, Ethiopia at an estimated cost of 500 million birr is expected to be finalized this fiscal year.

The expansion project is 86% complete with 80% of the canals and side roads and 30% of the road network completed according to Kumelachew Abebe, Communications and Public Relations Process Owner with the Ethiopian Water Works Construction Enterprise.

The network of roads are planned to connect the irrigation projects with the sugarcane plantation and the sugar factory he said.

The sugar expansion project is designed to irrigate 7500 more hectares to facilitate more sugar cane planting.

The project will avoid problems associated with siltation and water seepage encountered with other projects as it will have 45.8 concrete canals noted Kumelachew.

The Finchaa expansion project was delayed and fell behind the original schedule to complete it last month because of shortages in required machinery said Kumelachew.

The expansion project is also over budget exceeding the initial 418 million birr allocated due to the increase in the price of construction materials.

The Ethiopian Water Works Construction Enterprise was awarded the project in 2007 and commenced work in the later half of the same year.
