Light Manufacturing Viable for Ethiopia

Ethiopia can transform its economic structure and create jobs through light manufacturing according Justin Yifu Lin, Chief Economist and Senior Vice President for Development Economics with the World Bank.

Lin launched a Light Manufacturing study that included China, Tanzania, Zambia and Vietnam as well as Ethiopia in his final visit to the region before his term as Chief Economist expires on the 1st of June.

The study on light manufacturing can help guide the transformation of the industrial structure and enhance the creation of productive jobs in various sectors in Ethiopia including, apparel, agribusiness, leather and metal he noted.

The research is based on a theory he proposed called New Structural Economics said Lin.

The NSE theory holds that continued growth is only possible with structural changes and foe Africa to see continued performance would mandate a move away from agriculture into areas such as light manufacturing he explained.

The New Structural Economics is his legacy as the Chief Economist of the World Bank said Lin.

The Chief Economist was also able to visit the Eastern Industrial Zone and attend seminars held at the School of Business and Economic, Addis Ababa University during his visit.

Lin will be taking up the post of Director for the China Center for Economic Research in Beijing when his tenure with the World Bank is concluded.
