The Ethiopian Electric Utility (EEU) has announced plans to connect 154 rural localities to electricity, through both grid and off-grid systems, during the 2025/26 fiscal year.

Presenting the utility’s annual performance and plan yesterday, CEO Eng. Getu Geremew said the initiative will provide power to an estimated 800,000 new households. The effort will include the construction of 19,760 kilometers of transmission lines. EEU also intends to purchase more than 18,232 gigawatt-hours of power from Ethiopian Electric Power for distribution. Future priorities include expanding distribution lines, improving service delivery, strengthening financial capacity, and developing skilled professionals.

Additional achievements included the replacement of 53,714 meters with smart devices, renovation of 7,390 kilometers of transmission lines, and upgrading 1,984 transformers, with investments surpassing Birr 4 billion.

Currently, EEU serves 5.21 million customers, far below the estimated 25 million needed to meet demand.
