Ethiopian Electric Power (EEP) announced that it earned more than Birr 75.4 billion in revenue during the 2024/25 fiscal year.

According to Chief Executive Officer Ashebir Balcha, the revenue was generated through the sale of electricity and related services. Of the total energy produced, 93 percent was supplied to the domestic market, while the remaining 7 percent was exported to neighboring countries.

The company reported that USD 338.7 million was earned from electricity exports, primarily to Kenya and Djibouti, while more than Birr 28 billion was earned from domestic sales. Of the energy consumed within Ethiopia, 60 percent was sold to Ethiopian Electric Utility, 27 percent to data mining operations, and 6 percent to industries.

EEP generated a total of 29,480 gigawatt-hours of electricity during the fiscal year, exceeding its target of 25,423 gigawatt-hours. The company stated that 33.2 percent of this electricity was generated by the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD), underscoring the dam’s growing contribution to national power supply.

The CEO affirmed the institution’s commitment to expanding power generation capacity in the coming fiscal year, 2025/26, and continuing efforts to strengthen electricity exports and energy access across Ethiopia.

However, the company also highlighted several challenges faced during the 2024/25 fiscal year. One of the most pressing issues was infrastructure theft. EEP reported losses due to theft affecting 43 power transmission lines. Additionally, ongoing instability and lack of peace in some regions of the country have posed obstacles to project implementation and maintenance operations.
