Ethiopia: Ethio Telecom and CNET Software Technologies Ink Agreement to Implement CNET Payment System

Ethio Telecom announced that it had signed an agreement with CNET Software Technologies for the implementation of Telebirr and CNET integrated payment system. The agreement will allow the customers of supermarkets, companies in entertainment and hospitality service, hospitals, pharmacies, and cafes which are partners of CNET Technologies to pay service charges using Telebirr.

Based on the agreement, payment can be made by scanning the service or product suppliers’ QR code or by indicating to the cashier or store keeper that payment will be made via Telebirr. According to Ethio Telecom, 99 merchants have already integrated CNET with Telebirr and transacted a total of Birr 988.43 million.

Telebirr, a digital cash that enables more than 25 million of its users to access financial services, has close to Birr 102 billion transaction value. Among other services rendered by the digital cash, users are allowed to transfer money locally and make purchases online and at convenient stores. The mobile money service was launched in May 2021.
