Ethiopian Electric Power announced the successful installation of a massive rotor, as well as a stator, on the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD). The installation is part of the two early generation units with a capacity of 375MW power generation each.
The rotor alone measures 11.7 meters in diameter and weighs 780 tons, with a cumulative weight of 840 tons along with its accessories.
Sileshi Bekele, Ethiopia's Minister of Water, Irrigation, and Energy, had announced in July this year, following the second filing of GERD, that over 80 percent of dam's construction GERD has been completed and its two turbines would start generating power "soon".
