Ethiopia: Oromia to Create 800,000 Jobs

Oromia State of Ethiopia plans to create more than 800 thousand job opportunities with an investment of 2.4 billion Birr. The job opportunities are said to be created in the coming months of the current fiscal year.

The project aims to engage the youth in manufacturing, mechanized agriculture, construction, and mining. In order to achieve this, 200 tractors, 1,400 water pumps and 101 crushers have been prepared.

Commenting on the issue, Fekadu Tesema, the State’s Head of Communication Bureau, said the State administration was undertaking practical actions in the aim of creating job for 802,349 unemployed youth in Oromia. Out of these youth, more than 35,000 of them have attended either Technical and Vocational College or university, he furthered.

The state administration has already sorted the youth and areas of their engagement, Fekadu added. After identifying the youth, the administration began training programs which is said to give head up for participants with the nature of work they will engage in. The training began on April 13, 2016 and it will last for 5 days, the head explained.

Fekadu also explained the Oromia State allotted 300 million Birr for the project and the rest was to be covered by public enterprises such as Metal and Engineering Corporation.

According to Walta Information Center, West Wellega and West Shoa Zones take 60 percent of the share of the job opportunities to be created. The remaining 40 percent will be scattered across the State.
