Ethiopia: ERA Agreed for Two Road Projects

ASER Construction Plc and Yemane Girmay General Contractors Plc are awarded road projects that are worth 1.2 Billion Birr by the Ethiopian Roads Authority (ERA).

The road projects are going to stretch for 127 kilometers and will cost 1.2 billion Birr.

ASER is going to construct a 52.2 kilometers asphalt concrete road that will stretch from Koka – Adulala – Bishoftu. This road is going to connect Bishoftu with the Addis – Adama toll road, Modjo to hawassa Expressway and three other towns including Koka, Dire and Adullala.

ASER was awarded the project after proposing to construct the road with 613.2 million Birr and finalize it within two years. Nonetheless, a consultant has not been hired to the project and the Authority is in the process of selecting a consultant firm.

The road ASER will construct is going to cover a total of 94 kilometers and it will have 10 meter width in urban sections. Rural section of the road is going to be seven meters. It will also have a bridges and drainage pipes.

The other project, which is won by Yemane Girmay is going to stretch for 75.3 kilometers of gravel road from Aycid to Konge. The project is going to be carried out at an outlay of 602.6 million Birr and the consultant to the project is going to be Net Consulting. The road is said to include drainage pipes, road protection works, and traffic lights.

According to Samson Wondemu, communication director at ERA, noted the two construction firms were never engaged in federal road projects.

The two road projects are part of the Fourth Road Sector Development Program (RSDP IV) to which the cost is estimated to reach 125.3 billion Birr. Out of this 84.5 billion is allocated to federal projects. On the other hand states and woredas are going to be given 14.4 billion Birr and 26.4 billion Birr respectively.

It was Sisay Bekele, acting director general of ERA, that represented the Authority in the conclusion of the agreements. On the other hand Yemane Abreha, general manager of ASER and Wondesson Girmay deputy general manager of Yemane Girmay represented their firms.

“As the area experiences accumulation of sand near Awash River, ASER should consider it in design and build it to avoid the problem,” Sisay stressed.
