Ministry of Finance and Economic Development (MoFED) announced on Saturday, August 2, 2014, it has made salary increment that ranges from 33 percent to 46 percent for civil servant. The increment is going to be effective starting from the new budget year’s first month.
Civil servants with lower salary range will get the highest salary increase rate, 46 percent, while those in the highest salary bracket will get the 33 percent increment. This move by the government is also accompanied by an adjustment to the lowest pension fund to be 534 Birr from 294 Birr.
According to Sufian Ahmed, Minister for Finance and Economic Development, the increment will reach onto 1.3 Million public servants at an addition cost of 10.3 Billion Birr every year.
Sufian noted, “The increment aims at countering the burdens of inflation on civil servants as a result of the country’s economic growth”. He furthered the move has taken in to account the Federal Government’s expenditure capacity.
The Minister stated other measures such as free transport service, housing privileges and improving supply of commodities will be coupled with the new salary increment.
The salary adjustment also benefits teachers, health professionals, judges, prosecutors, the army, police, public officials and elected representatives. In addition to this, government agencies with a special salary will also benefit from the adjustment.
