Ethiopia Certifies 36,000 Civil Engineers

The Ministry of Urban Development and Construction, Ethiopia announced the registration and certification of 36,000 construction and design engineers to date.

The Ministry certified 24,030 Construction Engineers and 12,219 Design Engineers said Temesgen Tesfaye, Director of the Engineers Registration and Certification Directorate of the MUDC at a joint consultative meeting organized by the Ministry of Science and Technology, and a consortium of the Ethiopian Engineering Professional Associations.

An engineer is required to possess an accredited degree in the field to be certified although registration and certification of professional engineers requires work experience in addition to academic qualifications according to Temesgen.

An engineer with a BSc degree can be licensed if he or she has 8 years of work experience and has supervised at least 10 projects in his or her particular field he explained.

The registration and certification process is important to enhance the standard and productivity of the construction sector as well as offering a profile highlighting the technical know how and competence of engineers said Temesgen.

It is also expected that certification will contribute to safeguarding consumer interest and protecting public safety he added.

The registration and certification process was challenged by a range of factors including the difficulty in ascertaining the authenticity of the work experience presented, the ministry’s own limited capacity, disciplinary problems with professionals and the absence or weak presence of professional associations noted Temesgen.
