Ethiopia Spent 5 Billion Birr in Medical Equipment

Ethiopia has procured pharmaceuticals and medical equipment worth more than 5 billion birr in the just ended financial year according to the Ethiopian Pharmaceuticals Fund and Supply Agency.

The purchase includes more than 300 types of medical and pharmaceutical supplies including chemical, antibiotics and equipment said Yared Yigezu, Director of Procurement Forecast and Capacity Building with the agency.

Significant medical equipment including an MRI and digital mammography are amongst the purchases in the reporting period he explained.

Ethiopia Started Exporting Fruit to Djibouti

The Ethiopian Fruit and Vegetable Marketing Enterprise S.C said it has started exporting mango to Djibouti. Senior Quality Supervisor with the Company Abumsa Ayele, said the Enterprise exports various species of mango grown in Assosa, Benshangul-Gumuz Regional State.

Accordingly, the Enterprise is exporting 380 quintals of mangoes a week to Djibouti. The Enterprise is also supplying the product to the local market. State Agriculture and Rural Development Bureau Expert Asres Mammo on his part said close to 300,000 quintals mango will be collected in the state this Ethiopian year.
Over 175 million birr is expected to be earned from the export, he added.

Ethiopia Starts Exporting Electricity to Djibouti

According Prime Minister Meles Zenawi, the country has planned to produce about 8,000 megawatts of extra electricity from hydropower sources in the coming five years. He had announced on 2 April 2011 the construction of a 5,250-megawatt project at a cost of $4.76 billion dollars close to the Sudanese border.

According to the Wold Bank, Ethiopia's hydropower potential of 45,000 megawatts is second in Africa only to the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Transmission line to Sudan, financed by the World Bank, could be completed this year, Raihan Elahi, the World Bank's senior energy specialist in Ethiopia, said last month. And, according to Elahi, an agreement has been concluded for Ethiopia to supply about 200 megawatts to Sudan.

The African Development Bank supplied 95 million dollars to Ethiopia and Djibouti to support the project that links the two countries, Ethiopia Resident Representative Lamin Barrow said on Friday.

Ethiopia is expected to make 10 million dollars from the first year of the connection, according to Barrow. The foreign exchange Ethiopia earns the connection can be used to support the country's Universal Electrification Access Program, Elahi said.

Ethiopia has a plan to provide electricity to 75 percent of its population in July 2015. Currently, 41 percent of the population has access to electricity.

Ethiopian Shipping LinesEthiopian Shipping and Logistics (ESL) has started exporting live animals from a new quarantine facility in Mille, Afar Region. The company has transported the first 7,000 sheep from Mille Quarantine Center to Djibouti Port using 28 trucks.
