Ministry to Launch Unified Billing System

The Ministry of Communication and Information Technology signed an agreement with Global Communication Solutions for electronically facilitating unified payment of monthly telephone, electric and water bills. The system would help save time and labour.

Dr. Ahmed, GCS’s CEO, said that his organization was working with the government to address overdue billing problems. He said the agreement would be effective within three years after six months probation period.

The first phase of the system will be applied in 42 service rendering institutions of Addis Ababa while the second phase will be applied in Adama, BahirDar, Hawassa and Makalle.

Delegates from Ethiopian Electric and Power Corporation, Ethio-Telecom, Addis Ababa Water and Sewerage Authority attended the event.

Minsk Motor Plant Shipped First Batch of Products to Ethiopia

The Belarusian Minsk Motor Plant shipped the first batch of products to Ethiopia, Belarusian Telegraph Agency (elTA) reported.

“We shipped 71 engines to this market where they will be used to re-equip ZiL 130/131 and GAZ-66 vehicles. There are good prospects to expand deliveries to this new market. We have stepped up our efforts to explore and penetrate the markets of Africa, Latin America and Asia. These markets are very promising for us. We have already delivered the first batch of products to Myanmar, Burkina Faso, the Dominican Republic and Mexico,” the company said.

Mitsubishi Corporation Shows Interest to Invest in Ethiopia

Mitsubishi Corporation stated that it was interested to invest in Ethiopia in the textile and automotive sectors. Tetsuya Shinohara, Vice President of Mitsubishi Corporation, expressed his company’s interest during a visit to Ambassador of Ethiopia to Japan, Tefera Derbew.

Mitsubishi is currently involved in the construction of the Tulu Moye Geothermal Power Plant which has an expected capacity of generating 50MW of electricity when it becomes operational.

MOA Launched Wheat Productivity Initiative

The Ministry of Agriculture has announced the launch of the Ethiopian Wheat Productivity Initiative in collaboration with the Ethiopian Agricultural Transformation Agency (ATA). The initiative is intended to help increase yields and productivity in order to reduce Ethiopia’s reliance on imported crops.

The Ethiopian Wheat Productivity Initiative aims to increase the output of one million wheat farmers by at least 50%, eventually replacing all current wheat imports with domestic supply. This initiative is expected to save USD 250 million in related annual foreign exchange spending over the next 3 years according to ATA.
