Ethiopia and the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) have advanced discussions on potential financing for the planned Bishoftu International Airport and other strategic infrastructure projects, including energy and climate related investments.

Finance Minister Ahmed Shide and Ethiopian Airlines Group Chief Executive Officer Mesfin Tasew held talks with AIIB President Zou Jiayi during her first official visit to Ethiopia since assuming her new role.

The Bishoftu International Airport project was among the main areas discussed, with the two sides exploring possible AIIB participation in financing the development.

The talks also covered opportunities to strengthen cooperation in Ethiopia’s energy sector and climate action projects through concessional financing and partnerships with other multilateral development banks.

Ahmed briefed the AIIB president on Ethiopia’s ongoing economic reform agenda and progress on major infrastructure projects, including the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam.

He also outlined potential areas where AIIB financing could support Ethiopia’s development priorities and wider infrastructure expansion.

Zou acknowledged Ethiopia’s role as a regional anchor, particularly in supporting regional power integration, and reaffirmed AIIB’s commitment to backing the country’s infrastructure development agenda.

The discussions come as Ethiopia seeks additional financing for large scale projects intended to strengthen economic growth, regional connectivity and long-term development.

Ethiopia and AIIB agreed to deepen their engagement and continue exploring financing arrangements for priority projects, with sustainable and inclusive infrastructure development remaining a central area of future cooperation.
