Ethiopian Shipping and Logistics has launched a new digital customer service platform aimed at replacing paper based processes and allowing customers to access logistics services remotely.
The new system, known as Digital Customer Self Service, was officially unveiled at an event held at the Sheraton Hotel in Addis Ababa.
The platform will enable customers to track the status of their shipments, access customer services around the clock and perform various service-related activities using their mobile phones without visiting the institution’s offices.
Abdulber Shemsu, CEO of Ethiopian Shipping and Logistics, said the digital platform had been under development for several years and represents the beginning of the institution’s broader transformation toward international standards.
He said modernizing services and integrating technology into operations has become increasingly important for an institution that plays a major role in Ethiopia’s logistics and trade system.
The digital platform is also expected to reduce reliance on paperwork, integrate previously fragmented operational processes and strengthen internal coordination.
According to the institution, the system will gradually be connected with similar international digital platforms, which is expected to further simplify logistics services and improve accessibility for customers.
Takele Uma, CEO of the Ethio-Djibouti Railway Corporation and a board member of Ethiopian Shipping and Logistics, said the digital transformation is also part of preparations for Ethiopia’s longer term maritime ambitions.
He said improvements in logistics services and technology are important, while emphasizing the significance of access to and ownership of a seaport for the country’s trade and logistics ambitions.
In addition to the Digital Customer Self Service platform, Ethiopian Shipping and Logistics is introducing four other digital systems aimed at streamlining its operations and bringing its services closer to international standards.
The institution said the broader digitalization program is intended to improve efficiency, customer accessibility and coordination across its logistics operations.
