The Dire Dawa-Dewele Railway Company has announced that it has increased its transport service from two trips per week to three.

The company had suspended operations for two weeks after flash floods damaged parts of the railway line. Services resumed after repair works were completed.

The railway company, which provides transport services from Dire Dawa to Dewele, reportedly generated more than Birr 33 million in revenue over the past nine months.

The company reviewed its nine month performance during its 20th regular board meeting held on Tuesday.

The 781 kilometer railway line from Djibouti to Addis Ababa, originally established during the reign of Emperor Menelik II, was divided into regional sections following a decision made by the Council of Ministers five years ago.

The 208 kilometer railway line from Dire Dawa to Dewele is currently administered by the Dire Dawa City Administration and operates as the Dire Dawa-Dewele Railway.

Officials said the railway remains a key transport option for local communities, particularly for passengers and commercial cargo, in areas where alternative transport services are limited.

The company said it has expanded its capacity and increased the number of weekly trips from two to three in response to demand.
