Ride-hailing service provider Yango has launched its operations in Hawassa, marking the company’s first expansion outside Addis Ababa.
The company announced that passengers in Hawassa can now use the Yango app to access tuk-tuk services, locally known as Bajaj, as well as four wheeled Bajaj vehicles and motorcycle transport services. As part of the launch offer, passengers will receive a 30 percent discount on their first three trips.
According to a statement issued by the company, Yango has partnered with Elna Trading and Contrast Trading to introduce the service in Hawassa.
Yango said its Hawassa operations will be available under two fare categories. The first category, known as the Bajaj Tariff, includes three-wheeled tuk-tuks and four-wheeled Bajaj vehicles. The second category, known as the Moto Tariff, provides motorcycle-based transport services.
The company said Hawassa is the first city where it has expanded its ride-hailing service outside Addis Ababa. It noted that the city’s growing transport demand and readiness for digital mobility solutions made it suitable for the launch.
Yango Ethiopia Country Manager Dr. Kenekaalem Abebe said the company aims to make urban transport more convenient for passengers while creating better income opportunities for driver-partners operating through the platform.
Yango, which is based in Russia and headquartered in Dubai, began providing ride-hailing services in Ethiopia in November 2023.
The wider Yango Group provides transport, delivery, foodtech, entertainment, and other digital services in more than 30 countries across Africa, Latin America, Europe, the Middle East, South Asia, and other regions.
The launch in Hawassa is expected to expand digital transport options in the city and provide residents and visitors with more flexible mobility services.
