Ethiopian Airlines has signed an agreement with Boeing Company to purchase six Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft, in a move aimed at expanding its long-haul operations and strengthening its fleet.
The Ministry of Transport and Logistics said the agreement, signed with the U.S.-based aerospace company in Virginia, will further reinforce the airline’s position in international aviation.
The new aircraft are expected to support Ethiopian Airlines’ intercontinental routes from Addis Ababa to destinations in Europe, Asia, and North America, with the aim of improving accessibility and convenience for passengers.
The Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner is also expected to enhance the airline’s operational efficiency through improved fuel performance and cargo capacity.
The acquisition will add to Ethiopian Airlines’ existing Dreamliner fleet, which is already one of the largest in Africa, and is expected to support the carrier’s long-term expansion strategy.
The investment is also seen as part of the airline’s broader ambition to become one of the world’s top 20 airlines by 2035.
In related news, Ethiopian Airlines and Green Motion, a British car rental company that has also entered the Ethiopian market, have agreed to work together under a new partnership arrangement.
As part of the agreement, Ethiopian Airlines Sheba Miles members will be able to earn additional miles when using Green Motion car rental services around the world.
Under the partnership, Sheba Miles customers will earn one mile for every dollar spent on Green Motion car rentals.
