The Ministry of Transport and Logistics has announced plans to introduce new vehicle registration plates featuring Ethiopia-specific identifiers and advanced security technology. The nationwide replacement is scheduled to be completed in the 2025/26 fiscal year.
According to a statement issued by the Ministry, the initiative is part of the recently approved Types of Vehicles Identification Number Plate and Symbols Determination and Service Delivery Directive No. 1050/2025 which aims to modernize Ethiopia’s vehicle registration system in line with international standards.
Transport and Logistics Minister Dr. Alemu Sime said the new system marks a significant step forward for the country’s transport sector. He noted that the existing license plates have become outdated, failing to meet the demands of a rapidly expanding vehicle fleet and the requirements of international agreements signed by Ethiopia.
Dr. Alemu explained that the current plates are vulnerable to forgery and unsuitable for effective regulatory oversight. In contrast, the new system will be technology-assisted, allowing authorities to identify vehicles electronically. Each plate will contain encrypted information accessible only to authorized bodies, ensuring data security and reducing fraud.
State Minister Bero Hassan added that the redesigned plates will better accommodate the growing number of vehicles nationwide and support efforts to create an integrated national vehicle database.
The Ministry has urged vehicle owners to comply with the replacement schedule once implementation begins, emphasizing that the new system will enhance transparency, accountability, and efficiency in Ethiopia’s transport management framework.
