At the 42nd session of the (ICAO) in Montreal, Canada, Ethiopia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) reached a mutual understanding to upgrade their existing air transport services.
The two countries agreed to move beyond the current arrangement, which has been governed by a memorandum of understanding, and work towards a higher level of cooperation to improve service delivery and connectivity.
During the session, Ethiopian Civil Aviation Authority (ECAA) Director General Yohannes Abera emphasized the importance of joint efforts to elevate global air transport services. In his address, Yohannes highlighted Ethiopia’s historical ties with ICAO, recalling that the country was a founding member of the organization during its establishment conference held in Chicago, USA, 80 years ago. He noted that Ethiopia has since built a strong and modern civil aviation system, positioning itself as a key player in the region’s aviation industry.
The agreement with the UAE is expected to boost flight operations, strengthen bilateral relations, and support Ethiopia’s long term aviation development goals.
