The Ministry of Transport and Logistics has announced that over 400 electric vehicle (EV) charging stations are now operational in Addis Ababa. State Minister Ato Bero Hassan emphasized, however, that more infrastructure is needed to support the growing number of electric vehicles in the city. Currently, about 90 high-capacity charging stations serve various areas of Addis Ababa, but more are required to meet demand.

Ato Bero highlighted that many residents of Addis Ababa live in shared housing, preventing them from charging their vehicles at home. As a result, additional charging stations are needed in neighborhoods to ensure access for everyone. The city currently requires 1,176 high-capacity stations, while regional cities will need 1,050 more.

To address this, a new directive is being implemented to encourage investment in charging infrastructure. Companies importing electric vehicles will now be required to install at least two charging stations, while those assembling vehicles must set up three.

Nationwide, the Ministry has outlined a goal to establish 2,226 charging stations. Efforts are also underway in regional cities like Gondar, Bahir Dar, and Debre Birhan, where electric city buses are already operating.

Ato Bero also confirmed that the transition of taxis and buses to electric vehicles will continue to be prioritized as part of Ethiopia’s larger strategy for sustainable transportation and reduced emissions. The ongoing expansion of charging infrastructure is crucial to making electric vehicles a viable option for more Ethiopians.
