Ethio-Djibouti Railway S.C. (EDR) has relocated 104 empty 20-foot containers from the Port of Djibouti to Addis Ababa’s Indode Freight Yard, marking a step in strengthening Ethiopia’s export logistics.
Executed in partnership with the Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC), the operation aims to alleviate the persistent shortage of containers in Ethiopia and streamline logistics for exporters of coffee, cereals, and other key commodities.
“These containers will soon be filled with high-quality export goods,” said EDR CEO Takele Uma. “And this is just the beginning, we plan to reposition more containers to sustain smooth trade flows.” He thanked the Ethiopian Customs Authority, MSC, and EDR’s logistics team for their coordinated efforts.
EDR’s Global Logistics Director, Ms. Mentesnot Yohannes, noted that the initiative reduced reliance on port-based services and enhances local access to containers.
The directive prioritizes high-value exports such as like coffee, preserving their quality and boosting market competitiveness. EDR’s actions underscore its expanding role in Ethiopia’s export-led economic growth.
