As Africa’s aviation sector undergoes rapid transformation, global aircraft manufacturer Embraer is placing Ethiopia at the center of its continental strategy.
Speaking on the sidelines of the 81st IATA Annual General Meeting in New Delhi, India, held from June 1–3, Embraer’s President and CEO of Commercial Aviation emphasized the country’s growing importance as a regional aviation hub.
“Connectivity will be key. We are the number one provider of aircraft below 150 seats in Africa, and we see huge opportunities with Ethiopia,” he said. “That’s why I’ve been out there a few times to meet with the airline and the broader aviation sector.”
Embraer’s versatile aircraft, particularly the E-Jet and 50-seater ERJ145, are well-suited for Africa’s thinner, underserved routes. These jets provide efficiency and operational flexibility for markets where smaller aircraft sizes are essential.
The company has long-standing ties with Ethiopian Airlines, Africa’s largest and most successful carrier. While Embraer aircraft are not yet part of its fleet, collaboration has been ongoing for more than a decade. “We only want to offer aircraft where they truly make sense for the airline’s strategy,” the CEO noted.
Financing challenges persist across Africa, but Ethiopia stands out. “Ethiopian Airlines is very strong. We see fewer obstacles there and have multiple financing options, including leasing and export agencies.”
Looking ahead, Embraer hopes to deepen its footprint through local partnerships, training, and supply chain integration in Ethiopia. “Buying our aircraft means entering a 20-year relationship. It’s not just about planes, it’s about development, jobs, and long-term collaboration,” he concluded.
