The Ministry of Transport and Logistics has announced the launch of a nationwide driver competency assessment aimed at improving road safety, with the program set to begin this year.
According to the Ministry, 83 percent of traffic accidents in the country are linked to driver behavior and vehicle issues, prompting the introduction of the new assessment initiative. State Advisor to the Minister, Assefa Hadis, confirmed that the program will start with currently active drivers.
The assessment will target public transport and dry cargo drivers in levels 1 to 3, as well as liquid cargo drivers in categories 1 and 2. Before undergoing the evaluation, drivers will receive vocational training to prepare them for the test.
Upon successful completion, drivers will be awarded a Certificate of Competency (COC), which will grant their licenses international recognition. Drivers who do not pass the initial assessment will be required to undergo additional training and retake the test.
Officials also warned that individuals without the required professional competency certificate will not be allowed to operate vehicles. The program is expected to expand to include taxi and other drivers in the future.
