Ethiopian Railways Corporation reported that the Awash-Kombolcha-Hara-Woldia underground railway construction was at 93%.
The Standing Committee on Public Enterprise Affairs of the House of Representatives assessed the Corporation's 2023/24 fiscal year plan and 1st quarter performance. The committee advised the corporation to address existing issues and prioritize results to complete the remaining seven percent. Recommendations include reducing debt, enhancing internal revenue, collaborating with regional administrations, and addressing land management gaps.
Challenges, such as property theft and war-related disruptions in northern Ethiopia, were acknowledged. The Corporation aims to recover properties and complete the project. Financial constraints were highlighted, with a plea for the committee's support to resume projects halted by debt and loan interest pressures. The plan envisions expanding the Ethiopian underground railway from 656 to 1,266 kilometers in the future.
