Ethio-Djibouti Standard Gauge Railway Share Company (EDR) exceeded its revenue and cargo transport targets in the first quarter of the current fiscal year.

The company generated Birr 998.13 million in revenue, surpassing the planned Birr 875 million. The revenue was driven by the company's handling of 63,081 passengers and transporting 587,000 tons of incoming and outgoing cargo during the quarter. Notably, EDR surpassed its cargo transport target of 670,000 tons and its passenger transport target of 37,500 passengers. EDR has increased its total cargo transportation capacity from 1.3 million tons to 2 million tons. It projects to collect more than Birr 4 billion by the end of December 2023.

The railway line currently serves 20 stations, and preparations are underway to open new service stations to further connect communities and businesses. EDR provides a diverse range of freight and passenger train services, transporting essential goods such as students' textbooks, soil fertilizer, vehicles, vegetables, fruits, and other products. Additionally, plans are in progress to transport cement and sand by train, further expanding the company's cargo offerings.
