The Ministry of Transport and Logistics has announced the successful implementation of the electronic fuel payment system. The system offers multiple payment options, including Tele Birr, CBE Birr, Fuel app, and Copay-ebirr and has facilitated over Birr 24 billion in transactions nationwide and is currently being used in 1,317 gas stations across the country. Over 10 million electronic fuel transactions have been conducted using these payment options since the system's national implementation.
Tele Birr has been particularly popular, with Ethio telecom customers conducting transactions in 1,204 gas stations and exchanging about Birr 23 billion. Additionally, CBE Birr fuel application payment options have facilitated over 95,000 digital payment transactions, while copay-ebirr payment options have facilitated 10,000 transactions.
The Coordinator of the Fuel Subsidy Project at the Ministry of Transport and Logistics, Suleiman Mohammad, stressed that the electronic fuel payment system has been mandated to prevent illegal activities, fuel wastage, and cash transfers and promote good digital payment practices within the society. Starting from July 1, 2023, drivers who use coupons were required to use electronic fuel payment options.
