Ethiopia has set a target of generating USD 13.4 billion in export revenue during the 2026/27 fiscal year, as the government seeks to increase foreign exchange earnings and expand the country’s presence in international markets.
The target was discussed during a consultation between government officials and exporters, where participants reviewed export performance during the previous fiscal year and identified priorities for the coming year.
Ethiopia generated more than USD 11.2 billion in export earnings during the 2025/26 fiscal year. Minister of Trade and Regional Integration Kassahun Gofe said the performance provides a basis for pursuing the new export target.
According to the minister, exporters contributed significantly to the country’s foreign exchange earnings during the year. The government and the private sector have agreed to work together to address operational challenges affecting exports and improve access to international markets.
Ethiopia’s export strategy for the new fiscal year will focus on increasing value addition, improving product quality and strengthening competitiveness rather than relying mainly on higher export volumes.
The government also plans to diversify export destinations, enter new international markets, strengthen existing trade relationships and modernize export systems through digital and data-based trade platforms.
During the consultation, exporters raised concerns related to production, logistics, market access and trade facilitation. The Ministry of Trade and Regional Integration said it would work with private-sector stakeholders to address these challenges and improve the operating environment for exporters.
The USD 13.4 billion export target is part of Ethiopia’s broader economic reform agenda, which includes efforts to expand manufacturing and agro-processing exports, improve trade competitiveness and increase foreign currency earnings.
The government also plans to support exporters through policy coordination, market promotion and measures aimed at improving the quality and competitiveness of Ethiopian products in regional and international markets.
