
Ethiopia generated more than USD 5.7 billion in revenue from its mining sector during the 2025/26 fiscal year, while electricity exports and sales brought in USD 477 million, according to the Ministries of Mines and Water and Energy.
The Ministry of Mines announced the figures during a performance review of the 2025/26 fiscal year and the presentation of its plan for the 2026/27 fiscal year.
Mining Minister Habtamu Tegen said the country produced 44.067 tonnes of gold during the year. Traditional miners accounted for 40.86 tonnes, while licensed companies produced the remaining 3.209 tonnes.
Gold production generated more than USD 5.65 billion in revenue, contributing the vast majority of earnings from the mining sector. Overall mining revenue exceeded USD 5.7 billion during the fiscal year.
The ministry has set a target of generating USD 6.7 billion in mining revenue during the 2026/27 fiscal year.
Separately, the Ministry of Water and Energy reported that electricity sales generated USD 477 million during the 2025/26 fiscal year, exceeding the planned USD 427 million.
The ministry said more than 9,730 megawatts of electricity were generated from various energy sources during the year, helping expand electricity access in both urban and rural areas.
Electricity sales also surpassed expectations, with more than 34,025 gigawatt-hours sold compared with an initial target of 31,583 gigawatt-hours.
The ministry said it is working with relevant stakeholders to increase foreign exchange earnings from electricity exports and plans to further strengthen Ethiopia's regional electricity interconnections.
