The National Bank of Ethiopia has authorized all licensed commercial banks in Ethiopia to issue export permits for goods destined to the People’s Republic of China.
The decision lifts a previous restriction that required export permits for goods exported to China to be processed exclusively through the Commercial Bank of Ethiopia. The restriction had been introduced under a directive issued in connection with the general economic and financial cooperation agreement between the governments of Ethiopia and China.
According to the National Bank of Ethiopia, the change is intended to further streamline the country’s foreign trade sector, improve competitiveness, and create a more accessible environment for exporters.
Effective May 26, 2026, all licensed commercial banks are authorized to issue export permits, manage documentary credits, and handle related banking transactions for exports destined to China.
The central bank also requested commercial banks to facilitate these export services for their clients in compliance with existing foreign exchange and export regulations.
The measure is expected to give exporters broader access to banking services when processing exports to China.
