Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has announced that Ethiopia is on course to generate USD 10 billion in export earnings during the current 2025/26 fiscal year, building on the strong export performance recorded in 2024/25.
The announcement was made during the opening of the 4th Made in Ethiopia Expo. The Prime Minister said the latest projection reflects a major increase compared to three years ago, when the country’s annual export earnings had not exceeded USD 3 billion.
The new target also represents a further increase from the 2024/25 fiscal year, when Ethiopia earned USD 8.3 billion from exports. That figure marked a 116 percent increase from the previous year and was the country’s highest ever trade earnings.
The Prime Minister linked the current export outlook to the expansion of the industrial sector and the implementation of the Made in Ethiopia initiative. Manufacturing sector growth has reportedly increased from 4.7 percent to 10.7 percent this year.
The government’s economic strategy has focused on increasing exports while reducing dependence on imported goods through stronger domestic production. Over the past four years, Ethiopia has produced import substitute goods valued at USD 14.5 billion, with plans to double that figure in the coming years.
The Prime Minister also stated that 993 previously closed industries have resumed operations, while 3,680 new investors have entered the manufacturing sector since the launch of the national industrial drive.
Ethiopia has also identified 96 products for import substitution through local manufacturing, including planned expansion in the ceramics industry. The Prime Minister stated that the economy is currently growing at 10.2 percent, supported by agriculture, mining, manufacturing, tourism, and technology.
