Ethiopia and Kenya have signed a Border Trade Agreement aimed at strengthening cross-border trade between the two countries.
The agreement was signed by Ethiopia’s Ministry of Trade and Regional Integration and Kenya’s Ministry responsible for investment, trade, and industry. It follows understandings reached earlier during discussions held in Mombasa, Kenya, on April 17, 2025.
The Border Trade Agreement is intended to support small-scale cross-border trade by reducing existing trade barriers and introducing a clearer and more predictable framework for traders operating along the border areas. The framework is expected to particularly benefit informal traders, including women and youth, who currently conduct much of their trade outside formal systems.
According to information from the Ministry of Trade and Regional Integration, the agreement will also promote safer and more sustainable economic activity by simplifying customs procedures and harmonizing trade documentation between the two countries.
Once fully implemented, the agreement is expected to expand trade opportunities along the Ethiopia - Kenya border and enhance coordination between government institutions and the private sector in both countries.
