Ethiopia is set to commence official trade in goods under the African Continental Free Trade Agreement (AfCFTA) on October 9, 2025, marking a significant step toward regional economic integration.
The announcement was made by State Minister for Trade Relations and Export Promotion, Yasmin Wahabrebi, who confirmed that Ethiopia has finalized all necessary preparations to begin implementation of the continental agreement.
According to the Ministry of Trade and Regional Integration, the first round of trade exchanges will involve East and Southern African countries. The initial exports will include meat, vegetables, fruits, coffee, pulses, and oilseeds, transported through both air and land routes. Ethiopian Airlines Cargo will handle air shipments, while overland transport will facilitate trade with Kenya, Somalia, and South Africa.
The State Minister emphasized that the start of trade under the AfCFTA would bring multiple economic benefits to Ethiopia. The agreement is expected to boost the country’s competitiveness, attract greater foreign and domestic investment, and create new employment opportunities.
Additionally, the initiative aims to enhance consumer access to a wider variety of goods, strengthen market linkages within Africa, and encourage the modernization of customs systems to ensure efficiency and product quality.
The launch represents Ethiopia’s first operational participation in the AfCFTA framework.
