The Ethiopian Livestock Development Institute (LDI) has announced that the country generated USD 120 million from the export of meat and slaughter by-products during the recently concluded Ethiopian fiscal year.

LDI Director General Asrat Tera attributed the revenue growth to sustained government and institutional efforts aimed at enhancing the livestock sector. These include improving animal breeds, training skilled professionals, and ensuring product quality to meet international standards.

Ethiopia exported over 22,620 tons of animal products during the year, marking a 53 percent increase compared to the previous year. The export portfolio includes 21 different types of offal, such as liver, heart, kidney, and tongue, in addition to various types of meat.

Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates continue to be the top destinations for Ethiopian meat and by-products. Honey and beeswax were exported to countries like Japan, Germany, and the United States.

Efforts are underway to further expand market access and ensure the long-term competitiveness of the sector. As part of these initiatives, 1.97 million improved calves were born through artificial insemination programs last year.

According to the Institute, maintaining product quality and improving animal care remain at the forefront of Ethiopia’s livestock export strategy.
