Ethiopia has achieved a historic milestone in its coffee sector, earning USD 1.8 billion from exports over the past ten months, surpassing its target and setting a new national record, according to the Ethiopian Coffee and Tea Authority (ECTA).
ECTA’s Communication Director, Sahelmariam Gebremedhin, reported that from July to April, Ethiopia exported 354,392 tonnes of coffee, far exceeding its initial targets of 240,753 tonnes and USD 1.315 billion. The 147% performance achievement is the highest in the country’s coffee export history.
Top destinations included Germany, Saudi Arabia, and the United States. Germany led the market with imports exceeding 61,000 tonnes and USD 295 million in revenue. Saudi Arabia and the U.S. followed, generating USD 290 million and USD 192 million, respectively.
Sahelmariam credited the success to Ethiopia’s globally recognized coffee quality, improved market access, and strategic promotion. Compared to the same period last year, exports increased by 145,000 tonnes and USD 869 million.
Other major buyers included Belgium, China, South Korea, the UAE, Japan, Italy, and Jordan, collectively accounting for 78% of total revenue. Officials remain optimistic that Ethiopia’s full-year performance will further elevate its global coffee export ranking.
