
Ethiopia generates over USD 1.016 billion in the first seven months of the fiscal year from coffee, tea, and spice exports. Coffee exports alone contributed over USD 1.011 billion, marking a record-breaking achievement of surpassing USD 1 billion in less than half the fiscal year.
The initial plan aimed to export 156,190.21 tons of coffee, tea, and spices with a projected revenue of USD 805.56 million. Compared to the same period in the previous fiscal year, the country recorded an increase of 96,780.89 tons (71%) in export volume and USD 383.47 million (61%) in revenue.
Focusing on coffee alone, Ethiopia initially planned to export 147,987.11 tons and generate USD 797.07 million. However, actual exports reached 223,046.04 tons (151% of the plan), bringing in USD 1.011 billion (127% of the plan). This performance reflects a 70% increase in volume (91,861.39 tons) and a 61% rise in revenue (USD 383.42 million) compared to the previous year’s performance.
Saudi Arabia emerged as the top destination for Ethiopian coffee exports in the first seven months of the 2024/25 fiscal year, importing 41,807.94 tons (19%) and contributing USD 180.82 million (18%) in revenue. Germany followed closely with 41,711.94 tons (19%) and USD 176.58 million (17%), while Belgium ranked third with 20,002.19 tons (9%) and USD 95.67 million (9%). The top 10 destinations, including the USA, South Korea, UAE, Japan, China, Jordan, and Italy, accounted for 76% of total export volume and 77% of total revenue. Compared to their 2023/24’s performance, these markets saw a 70% increase in volume and a 60% rise in revenue.
By coffee type, Nekemte led the export market with 80,248.45 tons (36%) and USD 300.62 million (30%) in revenue. Sidama followed with 36,872.20 tons (17%) and USD 197.79 million (20%), while Jimma contributed 46,569.72 tons (21%) and USD 175.08 million (17%). Collectively, the six major coffee varieties accounted for 90% of total export volume and 89% of revenue. All varieties except Yirgachefe showed an increase in revenue compared to the same period during the last fiscal year.
