In the 2022/23 fiscal year, Ethiopia's export trade generated more than USD 3.64 billion, 69.8% of the desired amount.
Agriculture is the main source of income, accounting for 79% of all export revenue, according to the Ministry of Trade and Regional Integration (MoTRI). Mining provided 6.90%, and manufacturing came in second with 11.79%. The final three percent came from various industries, including the electrical sector.
MoTRI has been undertaking several reforms to modernize trade activities and solve problems such as contraband, hoarding, artificial inflation, and other malpractices, Minister Gebremeskel Chala stressed while presenting the ministry's annual performance. The ministry highlighted issues with local, national, and international peace and security as the main barriers to commerce.
The Ministry has also taken significant steps to streamline bureaucratic processes related to trade licenses and services. Trade registration and license services are now predominantly provided online, reducing issues of mismanagement. In addition, the Ministry implemented various measures to modernize trade registration and license issuance. It successfully issued over 2.56 million licenses, which accounts for 94% of its plan to issue more than 2.74 million licenses. Approximately 1.46 million licenses were issued online.
