Ethiopia earned USD 1.1 billion from coffee exports in the first 11 months of this fiscal year. Despite exporting a comparatively lower volume of coffee, the amount earned is almost the same as last year, thanks to the emphasis on exporting high-quality coffee.
Last year, Ethiopia exported 300,000 tons of coffee and earned about USD 1.4 billion. This year, about 183,000 tons of coffee were exported in the past ten months, earning USD 1 billion, and in the eleventh month, over 27,000 tons of coffee were exported, earning USD 150 million. Furthermore, Ethiopia has increased the production of specialty coffee, which now accounts for 70% of its coffee share, making it resilient to the price volatility of the global coffee market.
Despite a 30% decrease in the price of coffee on the global market due to various reasons, including the war in Ukraine and Russia, the price of Ethiopian coffee has increased due to its quality.
ECTA emphasized the importance of pre-production and post-production in maintaining the quality of coffee and stated that it had been prioritizing quality during transportation, storage, and processing.
Coffee is critical to Ethiopia's economy, generating 24% of the nation's export income. The major coffee export destinations are the USA, Japan, Saudi Arabia, Belgium, and Germany.
