China’s Zero-Tariff Treatment Targets Ethiopia

Ethiopia, Burundi, and Niger will become beneficiaries of China’s zero-tariff treatment starting from March 1, 2023. The treatment targets 98% of taxable items which are exported from the three countries to China.

In December last year, it was announced that China allowed duty free access to 1,644 items that would be exported from Ethiopia. Afghanistan, Benin, Burkina Faso, Guinea-Bissau, the Kingdom of Lesotho, Malawi, Sao Tome and Principe, Tanzania, Uganda, and Zambia are beneficiaries of the duty-free access.

Bilateral trade relations between Africa and China reached USD 282 billion in 2022. China’s exports to Africa were USD 164.49 billion while its imports from the continent were registered to be USD 117.51 billion.
