Ethiopian Manufacturers Concerned by Quality of Chinese Goods

Ethiopian manufacturers and processors expressed their concern over the cheap and low quality goods imported from China.

Representatives of various Ethiopian businesses expressed their disappointment with poor quality of Chinese products that are currently flooding the market at a meeting with a Chinese business delegation of the International Trade Promotion Chamber of Commerce visiting Ethiopia.

A significant proportion of Chinese imports are of below the standards of quality established for the market noted the representatives at the meeting organized by the Ethiopian Chamber of Commerce and Sectoral Associations.

The low quality imports are also contributing to the trend of poor quality imports coming into the country from all destinations noted the business people.

The bilateral agreement signed between Ethiopian and China which allows for the import of goods from chin should only be passed under the inspection of the Bureau of Inspection and Guarantee of China they argued.

Some companies cited incidents when Chinese suppliers failed to deliver goods according to the standards and qualities established by contractual agreement.

Palm Ethiopia cited as an example the company’s experience with the failure of a Chinese supplier which delivered a low standard and poor quality caustic soda against the agreement between the two companies.

Palm Ethiopia was unable to receive any redress for the breach of contract even after contacting the Chinese Embassy in Ethiopia.
