Ethiopian Coffee Enterprise Earns 209 Million Birr

The Coffee Plantation Development Enterprise of Ethiopia earned 209 million birr from the sale of coffee this fiscal year it reported.

The revenue was earned from the sale of more than 75,000 quintals of coffee that the enterprise supplied to domestic and international markets according to Fesseha Tekle Director General of the CPDE.

The most important international export destinations for the enterprise are Belgium, Germany, Italy, Japan, Netherlands and Russia he noted.

The enterprise achieved 85% of its target to harvest 77,000 quintals of coffee this season according to Fesseha. This year’s coffee output of 75,100 quintals was 13% up from the 58,000 quintals harvested last year.

Coffee sales, however, decreased compared to last year because of lower coffee prices on the international market and the global financial crisis explained Fesseha. The enterprise had earned 225 million birr last year he noted.

The enterprise has arranged to remove and replaced old coffee trees from 500 hectares of land with newer and high yield species said Fesseha.

The CPDE is an organization that mainly engages in coffee production and marketing sector. The enterprise has more than 14,000 employees, 4200 of which are permanent he said.
